From the Desk of Linda McDonough - State Director, Tech-Prep (March 15, 2006)
WHAT I’VE LEARNED
It is a new year, and as I wonder where 2005 went, I think about everything that has happened in the world of Tech Prep over the year that I’ve been director.
I started out fairly green as far as Tech Prep went. What I did know was that I believed in technical education, and saw it as a way to engage students and help them stay in high school, and then enroll in higher education, find a job, or join the military.
I’ve learned several interesting things:
• Martha Francis will eventually stop asking for articles for From the Director’s Desk. • Data is not consistent; when your data person leaves you fall on the mercy of others. • Sometimes those others have more pressing things to do. • The way “vocational” education is viewed hasn’t changed since the 1950’s.That’s a shame. • “Auto shop” and “wood shop” don’t exist anymore. • Years of teaching welding will wear out one’s legs. • Many cities are gearing up to “pre-certify” their workforces to entice new businesses. • Tech Prep programs could save Texas students and parents $27 million. • The Recommended High School Program was a requirement for Tech Prep students six years before it was required for all students. • Career and Technology educators are among the most dedicated professionals I’ve encountered.
I’m looking forward to our Partnering for Student Success conference April 24-26, and to meeting with the folks who truly believe in the power of partnerships.
Until next time-
